I've been looking for an end table, and with my budget and free time I wanted to do a DIY project. I've been looking at D.I. and Craigslist for any good stuff. Well the last time I went to D.I. it was super busy (the smells, the crying...) and I found an end table I really liked. But AJ wasn't there, and I wanted his opinion. So I took pictures of it with my phone and headed to the check-out line with some cool bottles I found...
Every single line had the cashier on their intercom asking for help. I was getting SO antsy, and I kept pulling my phone out and looking at those end table pictures while I was waiting. Then I made a "screw this!" sound and ran back to grab the table. I didn't want to risk someone else taking it. I looked like a doofus carrying the thing back up front, and I got some funny looks. After I paid for my stuff, I asked the cashier "you can return furniture right?" "Uh, no."
So without further ado, I present my end table that I can't return, but it's okay because together we are going to turn this thing into a real beauty.
I like the shape of it, and it's sturdy, and the doors work great. I don't really know what's up with those handles, but they'll be replaced. I think the way it's designed could match our little Ikea bookcase.
I'm pretty sure I'm going to paint it. The wood on it doesn't strike me as something I'd feel bad covering up. I've been thinking I could paint it to match our black bookcase, but then everything might start being black, black, black. Our sofas our blackish brown, but you know, pretty much black.
What do you guys think?
I also want to paint this mirror.
These next pictures are for my mom especially. I keep forgetting to show the artwork I made. I decided I need to have cool looking stuff on my walls. There's only so many pictures of AJ and I that I can put up before the place starts looking like a shrine to our relationship. Eww right? So I decided if I don't have cool art, I should just make some. In my opinion, anyone can do something abstract and call it art, frame it, and put it on your wall. But for heaven's sake, I'm an artist, you'd think I could put something interesting looking on my wall. So that's what I did.
And to finish things off, here's a recent picture of a humorous moment of my life. Somehow Grizzly got that hanger around him, and he climbed the stairs like that, banging the hanger against the walls. When I finally found where the noise was coming from I had to get a picture.
His little old man face will be gone soon...he's getting his first hair cut sometime in the near future!

I have the same Ikea bookcase, with two baskets in it just like yours. Crazy.
Cool! Are they in the same spots?
I totally thought turquoise when I first looked at it! So wierd...I kept reading thinking, eh, I'm just wierd about colors, and then you mentioned it! How funny. I don't know, I picture a distressed turquoise or sea green. But I've never been in your home. What fun projects! I wish we had a D.I. here :)
Oh and I picture the mirror looking really cool in a bold color, like yellow or red. Whatever you do with this stuff, you better post the pics of the finished products!
Crate & Barrell has a bookcase/buffet or something with similar lines, and like yours, it looks kind of Asian. The CB piece is like a distressed red with black showing through in some places. I think it looks really cute. P.S. I LOVE your art/photo wall. Where did you get all your frames? As you know (since you got the idea from me), I want to do something similar, but I haven't been able to find frames. Did you lay everything out on the floor before you hung it up to get the shape you wanted?

My sister is the awesomest! Look, you even found a link for me. Yes thank you for inspiring me to do my wall that way.
I got the square frames and mirror from Ikea, the other ones I already had. Those are ALL the ones I have! :) If I want anymore, there's a gazillion at D.I. I'm sure I could find a couple good ones!
And yes I laid it out on the floor, then took a picture and referred to that while I was hanging them.
The one on the right is in the same spot, but the one on the left is one space higher. It's a great bookcase.
As soon as I saw your table I thought red with a black antique rub on it, that is my vote, take a pic of it for us. What ever you do I am sure it will be really great, maybe you could paint a picture of you & A.J on the top, & Grizz on the side, & your mom on one door & Me on the other door (The pictures are a joke, you got that right)
www.joysofhome.blogspot.com is a great site for DIY ideas. The lady gets almost all her stuff from thrift stores and dollar stores. For one of her projects she painted the entire piece of furniture black, then put a coat of red on it and distressed the thing by sanding down some of the red which made the black show through. It was awesome. Your table would probably look great like that.
Wow, Amy that blog is so cool! Thanks for the link!
If you wanted to mix a little rustic in with your modern living room, you could always use a crackle technique. Do a base coat of a dark color and a top coat of a light color. Once it crackles, the dark color will show through, but you still have the benefit of the light color on top. If you wanted a neutral you could do dk brown under beige, or if you wanted to go turquoise you could do black as the bottom or top coat :)
i am a fan of turquoise with your blackish colored couches. i love do it yourself projects, and i especially love that joys of home blog... that lady is fantastic!
also, is it an overshare if i told you i did take a shower and then fell asleep in a naked ball on my bathroom floor? that's pretty much an overshare to all who read your blog :)
Haha, Liz. I love that. Sharing is welcomed here.
I love that table! I can't wait to see what you do with it!
holy moly. you have lots of suggestions already! ok here is what i was thinking...i think you should paint it one solid color. maybe a deep red. and then add some pimp new handles. the red/black distressed look as some have suggested would be sweet i think!
also paint the mirror something bold and fun. i dunno what!
and...i love your art wall. you are the woman!! ;)
